Host Organisation: Royal Courts of Justice Advice Bureau

Alexandria Lowry

I am from Romford in Essex and I am 23 years old. I graduated from the University of Hertfordshire in September 2015 with a Upper Second Class Hons degree in Law. In June 2016 I completed my Legal Practice Course at the University of Hertfordshire achieving a distinction. Throughout my studies, I also gained 18 months’ worth of experience working as a Family law Paralegal.

During my time at the University of Hertfordshire, I undertook a variety of voluntary work. These roles included, being elected by the student body as a Company Director and Trustee of the Hertfordshire Students Union. I was also elected as the Administrative Student Staff Representative during my time at Hertfordshire Student’s Union. I volunteered my time as a representative on the Raise and Give committee by helping to organise events to raise money for various charities. I also held the position of team leader for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, whereby I arranged events to raise money for the charity with the help of a team of people.

In my final year at the University of Hertfordshire, I was awarded with the "Union Fellowship Award 2015". This award is to recognise a student’s outstanding contribution to the Hertfordshire Student’s Union.

Project – Advising and assisting litigant's in person within financial proceedings.

Drawing upon my family law experience, it is my view that financial proceedings can often be the most confusing as well as emotionally draining set of proceedings that a person can go through. This experience if often made worse as many people within financial proceedings are forced to face them alone, due to the lack of legal aid funding available.

My project is designed to offer help and assistance to litigants in person within financial proceedings and hopefully make them feel that they are not alone. I want to be able to provide litigants in person with the tools and knowledge needed for them to successfully guide themselves throughout the proceedings.

In order to meet my aim, I intend to create useful and understandable guides for litigants in person covering all aspects of financial proceedings. Adding to this, I would like to offer advice sessions and seminars on how to successfully complete the various forms and applications within financial proceedings. I also aim to provide services for emotional support for litigants in person as well as free representation where appropriate.
