Southwark Law Centre’s main office is based in Peckham with a branch office Lewisham Law Centre
We have a staff of 40 people mainly solicitors.

Housing and Immigration are our largest areas of work. We aim to reach the most disadvantaged members of the community. We also provide casework in welfare rights, education, employment. We were the first Law Centre to provide environmental and planning support for local residents impacted by major development.

We have a number of projects that a trainee could be involved with including: immigration advice for homeless people; education rights; Windrush compensation; and Support for people with Sickle Cell.

We aim to influence policy and take strategic legal cases where approriate.

In all our work we aim to work closely with partner agencies and listen to our local communities.

Job Description

What can a trainee expect by training at this organisation?

• Interviewing and advising clients, face to face, by telephone and email
• Legal research and preparing submissions
• Advocating on behalf of clients
• Supporting at Court or Tribunals
• providing second tier advice for generalist agencies
• All the above under supervision
• Maintaining case records
• Assisting with preparing bundles
• Assisting with preparation of impact reports
• Contributing to business planning and development
• Researching and working on policy initiatives

Person Specification

Essential

• A high standard of academic achievement
• Strong commitment to upholding human rights and providing support for disadvantaged members of society
• Ability to express clearly and accurately both written and spoken word
• Ability to use online and written resources to research law
• Ability to accurately interpret information and follow instructions
• Ability to work under pressure. To prioritise and to meet deadlines/time limits
• Understanding of some of the issues facing disadvantaged local residents
• A commitment to the aims, principles and policies of Southwark Law Centre
• Ability to use IT effectively including case management systems
• Willingness to familiarise yourself with legal aid requirements and procedures
• Willingness to work at outreach locations in other Boroughs in South East London
