The Speakeasy Law Centre

The Speakeasy has been helping people in financial difficulty for 25 years. We advise on debt, welfare benefits, housing and employment problems.

In April 2019, we joined the Law Centres Network and became the Speakeasy Law Centre, currently the only Law Centre in Wales.

As well as our own advice service, we work with a large number of Cardiff solicitors to run a pro bono employment law clinic, which won the Lawworks Cymru Pro bono Award in 2015 and 2016.

We receive funding from the local authority to run a comprehensive welfare rights service in Cardiff along with Citizens Advice – Cardiff and Vale. We also receive charitable funding to provide further services from our main office and at outreach locations.

We have always sought both to employ and to train solicitors. We currently have two solicitors, all of whom trained at the Speakeasy Law Centre and three trainee solicitors.

We aim to make our service accessible by holding drop-in clinics and working in outreach venues, while ensuring our solicitors and advisers have the time to take complex cases to court or First-Tier and Upper Tribunals.
