Host Organisation: JustRight Scotland 2023

Rosa Grenfell

Briefly explain your most recent educational background and any work (paid or voluntary) you were doing before you began your Fellowship?

I completed my Scots Law LLB at the University of Glasgow in 2021 with a focus on international law,  human rights, and justice. I earned my Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at Strathclyde University in 2022, and then joined a Public Inquiry as an Investigative Paralegal. There I focused on legal research and analysis, assisting solicitors and counsel, and redaction. I enjoyed learning about the importance of trauma-informed practice in the legal sectorIt was amazing to work in a team seeking to raise awareness of the suffering of those involved and bettering protections for those people in the future.

Why did you want to apply for a Justice First Fellowship?

I am delighted to be training with JustRight Scotland as a Justice First Fellow as I am passionate about human rights, social welfare, and helping lower barriers to accessing justice. Before university, I volunteered with an organisation that focused on decriminalising homosexuality abroad by working with grassroots organisations and local lawyers. Since this opportunity, I wanted to work to affect change. I wanted a traineeship in this sector as it is important to me to help people fight for their rights while also working to challenge the wider oppressive systems in place.

Complete the following sentence: ‘Outside of my legal interests, I enjoy…’

Outside of my legal interests, I enjoy getting involved with my community. In the past I have participated in raising awareness of fuel poverty, river clean-ups, and undergoing training to be a legal observer. I also enjoy keeping active by being part of local cycling groups, learning aerial arts, and exploring the outdoors. I am always keen to try new things, and especially love finding time to read a good book in the sun.
