Host Organisation: Wilson Solicitors LLP and Rainbow Migration 2023

Karen Doyle

Briefly explain your most recent educational background and any work (paid or voluntary) you were doing before you began your Fellowship?

In 2023, I achieved Distinction in the Legal Practice Course (LPC) after completing the Post Graduate Diploma in Law with Distinction. Prior to that I obtained a BA in Fine Art Sculpture, first class honours. Most recently, I worked as Student Engagement Coordinator in the pro bono Legal Advice Clinic at University of Westminster, supervising and training student volunteers. Previously, I worked as a mental health and disability adviser across NHS, education, and charity sectors. Voluntarily, I’ve been an immigrant rights campaigner for nearly 30 years, advocating on issues such as detention, deportation, charter flight removals, and LGBT asylum.

Why did you want to apply for a Justice First Fellowship?

After intensive involvement in campaigns and casework on mass deportation, LGBT asylum, Windrush, and related issues, collaborating closely with solicitors and barristers, I decided to qualify as a solicitor. My sole motivation is to work in immigration and public law within the legal aid and not-for-profit sector. That’s why the Justice First Fellowship became my primary and only choice for a training contract. I am excited to join a cohort of trainees dedicated to social justice, and I am keen to develop a project to enhance access to justice.

Complete the following sentence: ‘Outside of my legal interests, I enjoy…’

Outside of my legal interests, I enjoy swimming, especially wild swimming. I start every new year with an invigorating dip in the sea. I find swimming in nature to be intensely relaxing and refreshing. I also love singing and have regular singing lessons. I am a voracious reader and following 4 years of academic legal study, I have enjoyed rediscovering reading just for fun, I like to lose myself in fantasy books. I chose Fine Art Sculpture as a first degree purely for enjoyment, I am a creative person and will always do some form of art for relaxation.
